Panasonic and Pioneer share technology but generally Panasonic gets a little older stuff. As a poor analogy, right now Pioneer is in its 8th generation plasma display technology, you will likely see that in the next generation of Panasonics (for less money, and arguably with all the bugs worked out). That doesn't mean they are bad in any way shape or form, unless calibrated I highly doubt you will be able to tell much of a difference between the two. I ended up picking up the Pioneer 5080 because my calibrator recommended it and I got it for a smashing deal through a friend at BB (<~$1300).
