While Plasma's do use more power than an LCD, I'm not sure that it's enough to really warrant getting a less quality black image for a couple of bucks on the electricity bill each month.
Keep in mind that plasmas use the most power when they display a pure white image, while an LCD consumes the most power when they display a black image.
I've read in numerous places that a great rule of thumb is that plasma's will cost about 1/3 more to run. So, if you pay $6 a month for your LCD, a plasma will run you $9.
