I agree Mike, over the years of PS2 and Xbox racing I've perfected the art of left foot braking even using the thumb buttons. I've always used buttons to control speed and triggers to change gear - always. I'm surprised and a little pissed off that the 360 does not have pressure sensitive buttons, they feel springy but they appear to be just on/off switches!
I'm practising loads re learning how to cyber drive using triggers to throttle and brake but it's incredibly hard and frustrating telling my fingers and thumbs to swap jobs.
