When you went via component cables, you might have selected something on your tv like the Comp1 input.

Of course, now that you have switched to VGA...your VGA input is a different input. It's possible that this input does not have any sound inputs associated with it. I've seen TV's like this. But look for red/white audio input jacks associated with that VGA input.
