it might depend upon your ISP and the equipment Bennie. I have an Arris modem from my provider and I know that it will only make a connection and talk directly to 1 internal host. Plugged a hub/switch only provides access to the first device that it sees and additional machines simply don't connect.

So, that's my experience. Just pony up a few dollars for a router and you will be all set with a firewall to boot.
