High definition is way overrated, it is a worthy leap between 480i and 720p due to the difference actually being noticeable on videogames at least for me, (not so much TV channels), but from 720p to 1080p I cannot tell the difference, honestly.

i agree that there isnt enough difference between 720 and 1080 for the amount of cash you have to pay. but there should be a massive difference between your sd and hd. when i watch the sd channels its like watching a vhs tape compared to my hd channels. it also makes a massive difference on games.
from the research iv looked at almost all the pros agreed that at average sitting distance you cant tell the difference between 720p and 1080p on most screens. unless you have a projector or something that is 100in. thats when you will notice a difference in your pq from the additional pixels. mostly just depends on wether you have a good quality tv, 720p or 1080p. iv seen 1080's that dont look nearly as good as some of the better 720's.
