My Rainbow Six Review.
I figured that I would review the game. I played the campaign for about 2 hours. I also played on live last night. Online, we played about 15 matches of Team Survival, 10 matches of Coop Campaign and 10 or so matches of Coop Terrorist Hunt.
The single player is quite nice looking and the physics engine is done well in my opinion. The story is nice and light with the normal "Kill all the terrorists" but there are a few new twists that I haven't seen before in a R6 game. I didn't notice any framerate drop at all during the SP. The AI is far superior to any of the other R6 games. They will duck behind cover, run away and reload, stack up and attempt to rush you and they also attempt to flank you if you sit still for too long. The graphics have been polished quite a bit. This was a big concern with many people because the graphics and framerate in the demo was a bit poor. I can't comment on the difference between the MP demo and the final game MP because I didn't play the MP demo.
On live you are first asked to create your character. You start out with a regular guy and about 8 faces to choose from. You can also use the live vision camera to map your own face onto your character. You can then go through the process of changing your clothing types, and camoflauge colors. You can also add armor. This is quite nice because you can build a character that fits your personal playing style. If you put heavy armor on your character will move like the characters on GRAW. Stick to the light armor and you can run pretty fast around the map. Then you get to the weapon loadout. In MP you can carry one primary weapon, a side arm and a couple of other gadgets. You can also change attachments on the weapons that you carry. If you dont like the stock sight that comes on a particular gun you can try out another one. Many guns have really useful attachments. The pistols can have High Capacity Magazines or Laser Sights (Which helps with accuracy). I didn't fool around with the PEC system for too long as I was anxious to get into a game.
I first started with some MP Coop terrorist hunt. I was pleasantly surprised. The Live games graphics look about the same as the last R6's single player campaign (A bit more polished though). The game ran smoothly for the most part (had a slight bit of lag during one match due to some people with slow connections). Then we moved onto the Coop Campaign. This was also fun but I was ready to take on some of my E-Enemies. So we moved onto some Team Survival. I was impressed with the speed that you connect to games. It took me maybe 30 seconds to a minute to get into a match. The games only lasted about 4-5 minutes though as we were playing survival (no respawns). After about 6 or 7 player matches (not ranked) I had filled up my experience bar and I am on my way to the second rank. It is nice to see that they created a game that you are rewarded mainly for the good things that you do as opposed to being punished for the bad things your teammates do. The longer you last, the more points you recieve for the game. If your team loses you still get point but you aren't rewarded as heavily. We nearly ran the clock out during one game and barely won and everyone on the team was rewarded around 600 exp. points. The next game we got slaughtered and were only rewarded 50-65 points. I have yet to play a ranked match so I can't comment on how the points system works with that.
So, basically I think the game is totally worth the buy. If you liked GRAW then you will most likely enjoy this game. The live MP is sure to become a contender with GOW. Sure, it might not pass it up but if you want to play a very fast paced military FPS then you should atleast rent this. My guess is that you will return the rent and stop at your local game shop on the way home and add this to your collection.
That is all for now. (Oh, and this isn't the end all be all review by me. I had a very small amount of time to play this and was just giving a first glance review for all of the people out there that were on the fence about this one.)
