Seperating them is not the best thing because it does not allow you to make games in HD-DVD or Blue-Ray formats that hold 30-50 gigs of data. One device is always better than two for numerous reasons like: less cables, less space needed, looks better, etc.
There is no evidence to suggest that blue-ray players are unreliable and prone to breakage, this is yet to be seen. And 360 owners shouldn't even talk about reliability of other consoles when so many 360's are defective and have to be replaced. Will PS3's suffer similar fate? Maybe. Maybe not.
