I get the idea in Multiplayer co-op you can score higher than the rest by finding these and using them, but is it just to make it more difficult?

Do they last the whole game then if you activate or just for that level?

And yeah - enemies not backing down, lobbing grenades, no shield and then some - all at once!!!
