I don't know what happened to the legacy of fighting games, I love VF, but for some reason I still haven't bought part 5. I think it boils down to my friends not playing it. I already have a lot of niche titles that nobody I know plays, and that would add to the list, I will get it soon...Sometime. I used to have friends that played fighting games, now most the people i know that play video games only play sports games.

I think people need to get used to the ideas of playing them online; for a long time it wasn't possible, and maybe people just haven't adopted the idea, while there was that gap in online play, FPS took over people’s interest.

Another idea; they take more dedication to be just okay at. And if you go online just being okay, you'll get smashed. Fighting games have a steeper learning curve then FPS.

Fighting games being online is what appeals to me the most but im never gonna be the best so like you said I would get smashed like many others, then I guess most people would get frustrated and give up.

I've never liked fighting games, FPS and RPG games are just so much better in every way.

RPG's have never came off as "manly" games to me, I like FPS but sometimes those get a little repetitive.

FPSs are boring. It's all been done before. I've played one, I've played them all.
Bring on more fighting and racing games, fucers! I want zany platformers and shit.
I want Skitchin and Road Rash on my PS3. Now those games rocked!

Oh what I wouldn't give for Skitchin' on a next gen console. And Road Rash. As long as the stayed true to the original feel. Even if that meant getting shitty reviews by todays comparisons, there'd still be the fanbase of the originals that would definately buy 'em.
That crummy Road Rash on N64 is a perfect example of how to wreck a games feel...

i think they have died abit, i got dead or alive 4 for my 360 but i dont play it very often but i do ocasionaly play it for a few hours every so often, what i dont get is why it has masterchief from halo in it :S lol

I think it is a good thing personally as many of the Beat'em Ups that came out in the 90's/early 2000's were crap.
What we are seeing now are the Good ones that have survived long enough to be brought to next gen!
Plenty of old rubbish ones are appearing on the PS2 still if you want more choice?
I just hope a really good Bloody Roar comes out sometime on 360 or PS3

no i doubt they are becoming extinct i think is just much harder to appese the fans of fighting any way DOA 5s gonna come out and Doa is the best fighting game i think (off topic slightly)
