fighting games had their moment to shine now it's shooters. i think free roam games will be the end of shooters. SFIV is coming out but doesn't seem the least bit interesting. the ufc game probably won't make it out this year. if it does i'd be extremely surprised. they are going through a lot of legal issues that could stunt funding.

I'm glad the old fighters are going out. They are too old school ad they should stay vintage that way. I hated DOA4 like no other, Virtua Fighter 5 seemed fun but it's just not that exciting anymore. There's really not much you can do now that you couldn't do in older games like tekken...
and 2D ones like MK3 and SFII are classic, it's all you need.

All the great Beat 'em up games got bastardized.
Mortal Combat - Fucked when it went 3d.
Street Fighter - Fucked when the added the Xmen characters.
Tekken - Still a great game, but the PAL versions were slowed down. I had a Japanese copy of 3 on my old PS1, and it ran 5x faster (character response) than the PAL version.
Virtual Fighter - Does it even exist any more?
DOA - Always a shit game. Full stop.
WWE Games - Sluggish controls, same with Fight Night for that matter.
Soul Blade/Calibur and Tekken 5 (Availabe on PSN) are the only good Beat 'em ups on the market ATM.
Oh, and the old games (MK3, Street Fighter 2) etc on XBL too.
As Lethal said, everyone's attention has gone to 16+ Player FPS. The era of the Beat 'em up is over.
What I want is Killer Instinct from the SNES remade exactly how it was with HD graphics. That's it. Same 2D, same characters, same everything except updated GFX.

the same as everyone wants Final Fantasy VII remade exactly the same, with updated HD graphics. I think the game makers need to get smart; I feel there is a huge need for bringing back the older games with updated graphics, not fucking them up/remaking them. Just a polish.

Benniemc I ussually always respect your opinion, but just to defend my game Virtua Fighter 5 is the highest rated fighting game at the moment...it usually always is...
acumulated from Metacritic...
VF5 has an 88
Soul Calibur 3 has a 86
Tekken 5 Online{PS3} has an 81
That being said I'm going to make a concerted effort and buy VF5.

One of the best beat-em-ups i have ever played was: Tekken: dark resurrection on PSP. It had almost everything a fighting game needed imo.
I loved the old school fighters & tbh i do like the look of the new street fighter game. Although it will probably be shite. There were to many fighting games out a few years ago & everyone got sick of them & like its been said, its going that way with FPS.
