Why do I lead the team in CoD4?

I don't get it, I've been playing CoD for about 5 hours now, and I've gone from the rookie in the group to the bloody team leader,
Many times we're stuck in a house we've just cleared, a seemlesly endless mass of bodies shooting at us through the windows and its upto me to make a run for it and get a checkpoint, so my cowardly piss poor excuses for SAS troops can then run after me.

Oh and another thing, if I DON'T run forward, will the enemy run out of people to throw at our 6 strong Machinegun'd meat grinder? or will they just keep on coming over and over again, stepping on the ones that fell before them?

CoD games make me think of First Person versions of Gauntlet. Unless you get to the checkpoint the monster generators will just keep churning out endless supplies of the same standard generic enemy model.

As I've never played it before I'm sat here shooting the same respawns for 15 minutes before I realise I'm actualy to take charge and do something, it goes from giving you very specific instructions one second to letting you kill respawns the next, very bloody frustrating so far.

Well if you didn't have to do stuff yourself the game would be boring. You are the player, so everything revolves around you.

That I understand, but a more integrated command system should be in place, not following one dude one minute then single handedly saving his arse the next, the getting commands and then having to do things for yourself one after the other is realy Bloody annoying me as I play.

I guess COD coders haven't changed their mantra yet. It was like that in COD3. You have to move forward to end the spawning bad guys. Kind of irritating for people who like the more conservative 'sit back and kill the enemy before moving forward' method.

Yeah it kinda leaves you unsatisfied, as you didn't clear the area you just went through a checkpoint.

^ It's more realstic like that though. You can't expect a small group to kill everyone in an area.

From another perspective, do you consider stepping on a certain piece of land to make the enemy magically disappear more realistic, than a group of highly trained spec-op soldiers killing a bunch of insufficiently or untrained insurgents?
