Lethal is correct - COD4 was the only non-WWII game in the franchise. I don't know why EA allowed IW to drop the Call of Duty part - seems like a no brainer to maintain that name in the modern franchise. People are smart enough to distinguish whether a released title is modern or classic era.

Well, that situation's different. See, this is a sequel. People who aren't familiar with COD 4 are probably wondering what Modern Warfare 1 was when they see this game. Fans of COD 4 will buy this because they know it's a sequel, but a REAL sequel with a continuation of the story and everything. COD 4, while numerically a sequel to COD 2, is not really a sequel, so it can easily be played on its own and makes for a good "entry point" for people new to COD.

I kind of like the fact that they've dropped the COD form the main title. Looks they IW are making a bold statement, and as someone previously stated a new franchise. I think Modern Warfare is they way forwards.

I heard Activision dropped the "COD" as a kind of "Fuck Off" message to Treyarch. Maybe they'll stick with IW from now on?

COD MW 2 isn't going to be that much different. COD 4 was made so that every mainstreamer could pick up the game and be good at it within a day or less. That's why COD 4 made so many sales. I don't think I ever heard IW saying that MW 2 will be so much different and requires you to play MW 1 either. It will be entry level game, just like MW 1, where like it takes is 2 fingers and eyes to be able to be desent at the game. The point of making MW 2 is to make money out of it, they aren't going to make the game super hardcore for the fans or whatever, IW/Acti are still looking forward to have a huge cash profit in return.
There will always be noobs buying the game, just like any other game you play, and saying that only fans should buy COD or MW is wrong.

I don't think it was meant to piss off Treyach. First off, Treyach is one of the 2 cards that Activision plays when they want a COD. IW pop a COD, then Treyach pops one, and so on. Besides, IW were the first one to come up with COD, so there is nothing to be ashamed off.

I'm just saying, if you buy and play the second game, you should own or buy the first game too. At least that's what i would do.

I typically do that too. But a lot of people tend to live under rocks or miss out because of the money issue or something, so noobs integrate all the time. The good news, is that they will make your stats fatter, the more noobs, the more easy kills.

Regardless, I pre-ordered the Special Edition!

Aparantly the execs are singing a different song now: Modern Warfare 2 Keeps Call of Duty Branding - Shacknews - PC Games, PlayStation, Xbox 360 and Wii video game news, previews and downloads
Quote:
Ending a lengthy period of inane speculation, Infinity Ward has confirmed that its forthcoming sequel to Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare will indeed retain the popular Call of Duty branding.
"Just recieved[sic] the first Modern Warfare 2 boxes straight off the press," Infinity Ward community manager Robert "fourzerotwo" Bowling wrote on Twitter alongside the above image of the CoD-tacular box art.
Previously, the developer had only officially referred to the shooter sequel as Modern Warfare 2, with indications that the game's commercial success could be hurt if it wasn't clearly labeled as a Call of Duty title. Publisher Activision certainly has high expectations--just yesterday, it delayed Raven's shooter Singularity into 2010, explaining that the move "clears the way for Modern Warfare 2 to dominate this holiday season."
Look for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 to hit PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 on November 10. In the meantime, why not take another look at the first full-length trailer? It's just below.

I kind of new that they will eventually crack, despite my hindsight, taking COD brand out of the game, can cause serious sale loss.
