Wireless Adapter vs Long Ethernet Cable?
Is there a certain point were a wireless adapter would be better than having a really long Ethernet cable? I don't care about practicalities I just want to know what would be faster?

Not in any domestic situation.
If you run the ethernet wire for a few hundred feet, you might need a little something to boost the signal halfway, that's about it.
Even then, wireless wouldn't be very effective, the signal would be too far.

Fast at what, over what range?
If its just for download then it's six and two threes since i doubt your internet is fast enough to max out wirless G let alone cat5.
If its streaming then a wireless N router will be faster if you get the new adapter microsoft might be brining out if you don't it will be limited to G speed but then again i don't think you'd have a problem streaming even HD over G.
If you're talking latency then the ethernet will probably be better but again, its all down to range, with cat5 every 100 feet or meters requires a repeater.

I'm on a wireless adapter at the moment but I've got the option to use a 100m cable (from way back it the original xbox days). But i might as well wait for the wireless N adapter.

I used to to use an extension cable, switched to wireless and now get twice the d/l speed.

That's indeed correct. Any more than 100 meters and you need a repeater/switch
