lap top extornal hard drive problem

hey guys this is my prob i got a maxtor external yesterday and when i plug it into my PC it comes up with a message

(windows could not load the installer for volume)
any ideas would be appreciated thanks

should of added this it is a windows xp and it also works on my mates laptop to

This usually occurs when you have removed some windows background apps such as MSN Messanger, Gaming Zone, Netmeeting, and so on.

Try searching for and renaming SFCFILES.OLD back to SFCFILES.DLL and reboot XP.
This SOMETIMES fixes the issue altogether.
