Budget Gaming Box - $700 AUD - Big performance
Just built my uncle a new machine, wanted as cheap as possible with the most grunt.
After shopping around I came up with the following config:
AMD Athlon II 620 Quad Core
2Gb Cosair XMS2 DDR2 800Mhz RAM
Gigabyte GA-MA770-US3 Main Board
Seagate 500GB SATA HDD (16Mb Cache)
XFX GTS250 512Mb GFX Card
Thermaltake M9 Case with 430Watt PSU
(Reusing DVD-RW from old computer)
Not expecting too much installed 3dMark06 (OS is Win7 Home Premium 32bit) and to my surprise scored 12100 points! I couldn't believe it!
A machine that cost $680AUD to build scored that high! I've never seen a sub $1500 machine score like that!
Gonna get some more benchmarks over the weekend of specific games as I install them.
COD4 - Cargo Ship: 1680x1050 - 4x AA/Full AF, Max Everything - Avg 87FPS.

Very nice! Why only 2gb of RAM though?

Budget. $700 was the hard limit. 4Gb would have gone $50 over budget.
As you can see, the machine isn't lacking without it.

Depending upon what he is really planning to do, 2GB of RAM may be completely sufficient. RAM has become cheap enough that people often simply overbuy in this area. But if you are on a budget...no sense in buying any more than you actually need.

the 2Gb ram shows it's weekness in some areas, I'm so used to my other machines with 6 and 8Gb RAM, and have god knows how much stuff open on those, running multiple installers at once on rebuilds etc.
Got pulled up fairly quick on this box with the missing ram!
Still, the machine boots in under 30sec with Win7 Home Premium!
Installing Crysis now....

Ah, Crysis...
1680x1050 @ High (Everything) with 2x AA = 28FPS Average. Playable, but not great.
1280x720 @ High (Everything) with 4x AA = 41FPS Average. Nice.

I don't even mess w/ AA on Crysis. (2 GTX 260's) I prefer going very high+max res(22"). It makes a much more dramatic difference in terms of eye candy.
**Oh and that's pretty much part for part I would select for an affordable gaming beast.

Crysis doesnt really need any AA (its to do with their clever engine) but as you can see adding it brings your computer to a halt, turn it off and run the test again.
