Right Click on Computer -> Manage

Select Device Manager

Go to Universal Serial Bus controllers

You should have a bunch of stuff there, A whole bunch of Intel ICH** Family devices.

Any controller from ICH4 onwards is USB 2.0 (First Released in 2002)
Or for quickness just type compmgmt.msc into the search box (or Run in XP).
I have and Advent from Jan 08 and my USBs are ICH8, flipmode yours will probably be the same.

"Just need your sort code and account number, so I can transfer the monies"

My gut tell me the WD HDD over the Sony, but the lack of reviews on Amazon is a little annoying.

Yeah I like the look of the Western Digital over the Sammy, I like the rubber look on the ends of the HD
I'm going to have a proper decent look tomorrow at work now I know they will definitely work on my laptop. There was a strange named one Amazon that had a wicked design that I liked, I'll try and find that one and see if it is my folks' price range

I can't remember the last time I have felt so happy from visiting X3F. You've both been extremely helpful and I am now forever in your debt

Even if your laptop wasn't USB 2.0 and was USB 1.0 then a 2.0 hd will still work. It will just lower the USB data transfer rate from 480Mbit/s to 12Mbit/s

I currently have a WD My Book 1.5TB.

I bought it for $170, pretty good I say. Plus it's incredibly sleek, complements my setup nicely.

The only problem I have is the sleep issue, it sometimes sleeps when it wants to... I wish I can turn that off.

I recommend it.
