Thanks mikewill - just facing reality now

External DVD burners are as good nowadays, since USB2 was released. They are more expensive then internal since you have the extra case and circuit inside.
Try to get a decent brand like Plextor, or Lite-On - they have decent prices too.....

Somet like this:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Plextor-PX-7...&s=electronics

Has both USB and Firewire, and is 16x

Bear in mind that if this was internal you could get a really good one for about £50-60.......

And, as Ifti said before, earth yourself. Preferably with a ESD (electro static discharge) bracelet. If you can't get hold of one touch a large piece of metal, such as a radiator before you start and don't rub your feet on the carpet!

Sorry
Heres one for you Ifti; do magnets damage PCs? I built my PC with a magnetized screwdriver and it works fine.

Is it difficult to install an internal one on a laptop?

Nah, Ive used magnetized screwdrivers before. I am careful though only to touch a screw and nothing on the main board etc just in case. But I havent ever had any probs using one.

Easy as piss. There should be a button or tab by ur current drive. Push that in and a tab pops out. Then just pull on the tab and the drive slides out.

Then simply insert the new one until it clicks into place.
