Not peice of mind. Lack of knowledge.
So many people at my work just arn't away that you can get good free AV software.
As soon as they find out, they cancel their Norton subscription, and install AVG Free, and the free version of Zone alarm.
They also comment how much better their computer runs!

Ah. It must be annoying having the managers (or whoever is above you) thinking they know better and telling you what needs doing.

Luckly I make the decisions like that at work.
McAfee Virus Scan Enterprise is great software, and doesn't have a big memory footprint. It performs alot like AVG Free actually.
We used AVG Network edition for a while, but the rest of the Uni got a McAfee site license, so we switched to that and saved money.

Defrag
Get an app like Diskeeper, works way better than Windows Defrag.

So, believe it or not, but I actually have a computer in my household now running Vista. Yes, sad but true.
My wife wanted a new laptop to replace the desktop computer that we keep upstairs that she uses to surf the web and so forth. I got what I think is a good deal from Circuit City on an Acer laptop, so I bought it today. And this means I get a P4 at 2.4ghz PC back with an 18" Dell UltraSharp flat panel. Going to put dual monitors on my Linux box
It's an Acer 5100 series
15.4" WXGA widescreen display
AMD Turion 64 x2 Mobile Technology Dual Core Processor at 1.8ghz
ATI Radeon Xpress X1100
160GB 5400RPM hard drive
2GB DDR2 RAM
DVD Burner
Integrated Web Cam
Vista Home Premium
$599 out the door. No rebates, nothing. Cannot see going wrong on a laptop for $600 for the specs above. (keep in mind, she will do NO gaming on this machine. Just surf the web, type occassional letter, use iTunes, etc).

The only thing which is "future proof" is DEATH. Did I mention, I absolutely hate the use of the term "future proof".
