Agreed. Although it's not always possible, as manufacturers seem reluctant to supply OS media.

I know a lot of you guys are tech savvy. I searched but didn't really find what I was looking for..

Ok so I have a nice new HDTV and suddenly those aXXo rips aren't looking as good as they did on my old TV. I expected that but now I want to watch films in very nice quality. I'm using my TV as a second monitor basically so I can just drag the media player over to my TV and woop. In theory.

I Downloaded 300 last night in HD format (300.720p.HDDVD.x264-SEPTiC) and I can't get it to play correctly. It keeps stuttering and freezing. I've been using VLC and WMP, but alas the same problem arises with both. Sooo then I tried a codec pack with some x264 stuff in and...nothing!
Moreso than this, I downloaded a HD WMV file from Gamespot and had the same problem!

Bah.

I really want to get this to work because I haven't got a player capable of doing HD/Blu-Ray yet and converting a 4gb movie to play on my 360 would be hell...not to mention the lack of quality!

So what's going on? Solutions? Is it just a codec thing? I've never had VLC stumble like this before.

Cheers.
The Graphics card is the least of your worries.

What CPU/RAM do you have, I'm not expecting it to be big/new, as your running an old GFX card.

Looking at the file name you posted, it's coded in H.264 MPEG4 codec, and you need a ballsy machine to play it back.

I have a 2.8Ghz Pentium 4 Prescott, with 1.5Gb RAM and a Geforce 6200 at work, and it drops frames playing back video in H.264 @ 720p as well.

You'll need to upgrade the whole machine to something newer to get sooth playback, or get an Apple. That format was developed by Apple for Quicktime HD, and it became industry standard. Any G4 over 1.2Ghz with 512Meg RAM will play that format at that resolution fine. Bloody Apple.

Get Windows Media Player 11, with the K-Lite Codec Pack, it should also play H.264 video, and you may get better playback than with VLC, as Media Player has been optimised for Windows, like Quicktime for the Mac.

EDIT: Oh, Quicktime for Windows will playback that file. You'll need to *buy Quicktime to get it to run in Full Screen mode. Being the fact that you download movies, you could find a activation key by other means.... Not that I condone that sort of thing publicly....

How do I know if my laptop can take more RAM? I'm running 2g DDR2 now, was thinking of getting a 2gig stick and then another 2gig stick eventually...would this work?

Make sure you get the security updates, anyone who tells you not to get them should not be listened to. Some updates are unnecessary; such as the updates to IE. In fact, the auto update to IE7 caused quite a few problems on old XP SP2 installs.

I do the ask me about update option. Then I review what they do. If they are to anything that has to do with Security, I update.

Most laptops have 2 slots total for RAM. Chances are that you have 2 x 1GB right now. You would have to scrap your current RAM to upgrade.

What make and model do you have? You can usually go to www.crucial.com which is a RAM company and they will tell you what your options are per your actual computer.

Would scrapping one of the 1g sticks for a 2g stick at a time be a good option? Like, would it work and all...if my laptop can take more than 2g's that is.
