Nah, the extra RAM will be nice, should improve startup times and general running performance.

What is the cheapest price I can build a decent computer? I don't want anything fancy, just something mostly for internet and email, and good enough to play average games. Would I be better off buying a cheap computer in store?
Anything would be better than the one I'm using now. This thing is 6 years old.

Depends on your skill level.
If you can build your own machine with a pirate copy of windows, you'll save heaps, you could build a full machine with new screen, speakers the whole bit for no more than $700US.
If you don't have that skill level, then I'd go for something like a Dell Insprion 530 with Windows XP:
My Components
PROCESSOR Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor E8200 (6MB L2 Cache,2.66GHz,1333FSB) edit
OPERATING SYSTEM Genuine Windows® XP Home Edition edit
MONITOR 19 inch SE198WFP Widescreen Digital Flat Panel Monitor edit
MEMORY 2GB Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 667MHz- 2DIMMs edit
HARD DRIVE 500GB Serial ATA Hard Drive (7200RPM) w/DataBurst Cache™ edit
OPTICAL DRIVE 16x DVD+/-RW Drive edit
VIDEO CARD Radeon ATI HD 2600 XT 256MB edit
SOUND Integrated 7.1 Channel Audio edit
KEYBOARD & MOUSE Dell USB Keyboard and Dell Optical USB Mouse edit
FLOPPY & MEDIA READER No Floppy Drive Included edit
MODEM No Modem Option edit
for $899.
I know the GFX card isn't big but if your only casual gaming then it's fine.
If you want you can get a bigger one later.

hmmmm maybe I should just buy the dell because I don't think I have the skill level to build a comp. I was thinking maybe if I had like a guide or something I could do it though. Is building a comp really that hard?

Wow, that's so cheap for those specs. Only like £450...

I'm having to turn my laptop so that it's like an open book if you know what I mean. Rofl.
EDIT: Fixed it.
