Well, actually i can see some truth to this. With the aero interface, and the windows sidebar enabled, Vista takes more power to run and thus reduces battery life pretty noticeably on a laptop. I've got those things all shut off on my wife's laptop which came with Vista and it certainly had an impact.

XP is a great OS. I enjoy eye-candy, so Vista is much more up my alley. I have been running Vista Home Premium since last February (06), and I LOVE it. I have never experienced reduced functionality, and if you are worried about resources, then either get a computer with PLENTY of them, OR you can trim down Vista to run on minimal resources very easy.
It's a great OS, despite the anti-bandwagon that follows it.

I agree with Tufo.
Have had ultimate for several months now. Never had any issues with it whatsoever, whether its development work, or gameplay.

Although I agree that Vista is a better OS than people say, I honestly see no reason to upgrade unless you're interested in DX10 gaming.
Personally, my transition was 'forced,' and although it's not really skin of my nose, the £180 it cost me is, considering there were no requisite benefits to be had.

To me, it's not necessarily that it's a terrible OS, but rather it's very disappointing in the end after all of the hoopla and the "years" of development. It simply hasn't provided enough bang for the buck for quite a few people...myself included. There is only 1 thing that has me even looking at Vista...and that's DX10. If they weren't holding that over my head, I wouldn't even consider using it. Of course, it's no coincidence that this DX10 support is exclusive to Vista...I believe that MS saw lots of people with a lack of enthusiasm and had to artificially create some.
Vista is honestly the only MS release since Windows ME that I haven't invested in right at release or shortly thereafter. I can even run it at work free of charge and I've decided specifically to use Windows XP.
