Laptop shopping

Hi all!

Here’s the thing, I'm a real tight-arse when it comes to big expenses. That’s why I can afford to make them =]. As I never spend my money I now have a sizable amount in the bank, and its time I got me a laptop to help me with my school work.

I was wondering if you can recommend any particular model.

There are a few things that it NEEDS to have. These include wireless capabilities, a disk drive (burner if available), and a version of windows (XP preferred, vista acceptable).

I know that these things are more or less a standard of the industry nowadays so they aren’t hard to find (I’ve been looking). But im unsure as to how much hard drive space I will use. This desktop has 200GB filled with mainly music and videos, but also a degree of schoolwork.

I suppose I can just about bare to part with 500 of my delicious pounds.

I have mild tech savvy and I’m positive that I wont need more than 1.7gigs of ram or dedicated graphics, but then again, I’ve set aside 500 quid.

Can anyone recommend anything? I haven’t come across anything particularly good, nor particularly bad.

I'll Keep looking.

Pounds Stirling. Jolly ole' England!

Ratio of pounds to dollars is almost 2:1 respectively. Just so you can get a sense of how badly we get screwed over here in the electronics market. =,[

That Inspiron looks very good actually *bookmarks* cheers =]

I was speaking to a non tech savvy friend of a friend and discovered he payed £900 for a laptop because it had a blu-ray drive. As someone who used to sell these I know its not something you pay 900 quid for. clown lol.

Edit:

oh noes! a friend of mine has scared me off, he seems to think that the hard drive speed couples with vista would cause it to run slowly over time. he linked me to Laptops Direct - Buy Cheap Laptops in the UK. Laptop Computers, Cheap Notebooks, New Cheap Laptop, Used and Refurbished Laptops. Find bargain Laptop Computers for Home or Business. but they seem to push far too hard on horsepower that I'm not going to use =[

All i know, is that the Inspirion 1525, is amazing. I bought one about 3 weeks ago and am extremely happy with it. I got 1.7 Ghz dual core processor, 160GB Hard drive, 3GB OF Memory and I couldn't ask for more.

I just love being able to run so many programs, and still have it run smoothly. I can run Photoshop, Itunes, Football Manager, and internet browser windows all at the same time and it will still run incredibly smooth. Get it!

I think in the end it comes down to a trade off between price and futureproof... ness.

Ill have to think about how far I'm willing to stretch my wallet and how long I expect to use the laptop.
