Help My Laptop Wont Wake Up!!!!!!

Okay so now that you are here.

I havea new dell laptop. 1.6 processor., 1 gig of ram., XP, 120gig harddrive,upgraded battery yada yada yada. Actually a very nice, and fast laptop totally happy with it

Everything has beenn going great after an initial influx of viruses that bogged down the computer (no antivirus) i dled some free anti virals and took care of if been running great.

So I have Verizon DSL. I bought the INternet Security package and finally Dled it the other night. As I was installing it it said to uninstall AVG free edition anti virus. I declined I figured 2 was better than one. After install it detects a bunch of spyware. grokster among other thngs. which I get rid off.

On the next startup evrything goes fine untill login. I login and it slows down ridiculously. SO after leaving it for about an hour i can finally access the start menu to uninstall AVG. that done ( i hope it completed) and I still have this problemn.

loads to login. I login and it basically freezes, I can move the mouse around. But I cant access start menu or open Inet explorer. basically I cannot do anything. COuld this be a result of Verizon Internet security? or is it due to a dormant virus that I somehow activated?

I watched a whole movie last ngiht with it up waiting to be able to access startmenu to uninstall verizon security. but no go.

Please help if you can. I havent had a computer in about 3 years so I am out of the loop, compared to when I was in college. I am typing this on my prehistoric win98 sytem I use for work only. It cant even play Counterstrike 1.1. basically only starcraft and Tribes. Just to give you an Idea of how old it is. I only use it for internet. and to access my 90's music because thats when I had this PC.

I wish i knew mate,
ive had plenty of issues just like urs.

Find virus's download a anti-virus, only to find it works a lot worse after you supposedly fixed it.

The only way i could get away from it all, was just doing a clean install of ur OS, i used to re-install xp every 6 months or so due to stupid amounts of virus's i kept getting.

just an option, if u cant think of anything else, and u have had enough of it.

Shit.... thats exactly what I was thinking.....

Ill just wait it out a couple more days..... maybe If i leave it onf or 3 hours Ill be abel to get at start menu. or someone will have an option for me.

Let it on until it lets you do something, then try and download an antivirus program. Try PC Tools AV.

It got this way by downloadiong antivirus. so I dont see how downloading another one will help.. There are 3 on right now. Which my be part of the problem.

anyone else have any tips. And if it comes down to it..... which i hope it doesnt...... whats the easiest way to reinstall XP? and is there anything else I should install with it?

TBH personally I'd do a clean reinstall - especially if you have no data you need to back up etc. It saves all the hassle.

If this isnt an option, try booting into safe mode, since that will only run the processes and services Windows really needs. Then run antivirus and spyware removel in safe mode. Some viruses and spyware cannot be deleted when running Windows, since they will hang on to, or use running windows files etc.

Failing that, if you hav ethe recovery discs, stick em in and reinstall!!

so just boot in safe mode and pop in the xp disc and start from scratch?

WELL PRAISE BE TO THE PC GODS!!!

after booting up last night. and letting it sit for about 4 hours while I played COD4.

I was able to acccess start menu. Uninstalled AVG anti-v, Uninstalled Asquared anti-v, defragged, disk cleanup (freed 2 gigs WooT) and then add /removed all programs I possibly could.

then ran Verizon Anti virus/ SPyware. straight out deleted all detected (47) i really dont think quarantine works at all.

WHOOOOHOOOOO!!!!!!!!!

its alive its ALIIIVVVEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!

thanks for all the help. so glad I didnt have to reload XP wasnt lookin forward to DLing all 60 gigs of music again.
