Help with telnet to router...

Overall Problem Description:
I have two Xbox 360's hooked up to my wired router (TRENDnet TW100-S4W1CA version "E"). My Xbox 360 which is port forwarded via DMZ and the other manual (i.e. UDP 88 -> xxx.xxx.x.xxx). For some reason they get confused and the first box that is turned on gets an Open NAT type. The second, strick or moderate. I read and read but could find no solution to my problem. Thing is UPnP needs to be disabled in order for both box's to have an Open NAT type.

Current Problem:
I have tried using command prompt to telnet to my router, but it refuses and gives me a connection error about connecting to host through port 23. Now I read some more and found out that the port could be closed. I also have tried PuTTY which won't work either. I need to telnet to my router to disable UPnP because for some odd reason this version of the router doesn't give an option to enable or disable the UPnP in the firmware. Can anyone help me out

when you say you cant change upnp in the firmware, you mean from the web interface? if so, can you enable telnet support from the web interface? also try looking into updating the f/w or flashing a hacked f/w.

Running Vista?

Being that you already sound like you have a pretty good understanding of what you're doing this may be a stupid question - if so I appologize.

Are you running Windows Vista? If so, telnet client isn't turned on by default, you'd have to go in and turn it on manually before you can telnet to anything.

Again, you already sound like you have a solid knowledge of what you're doing, but just thought I'd throw that out there.

That router isn't configured via telnet. It's managed through a web browser.

http://X.X.X.X (IP address of your router). Likely 192.168.1.1

The firmware and the web interface. I have updated the firmware, but no solution. I cannot get a solid hacked version of this router's firmware.

No apology needed. Thanks tho and nope. I know that, I have Windows XP. Which after the installation of SP2, Microsoft made it an automatic shutoff. Changing the Telnet Service from 'manual' to 'disable' being it can be used as a security loop whole.

It is not that it needs to be configured, but the router's telnet service needs to be disabled. The only way to do that since there is no web interface option is to telnet to the router and feed it manual commands to disable it. I read a review on newegg about a guy that posted saying how he disabled the UPnP by telnet'ing to the router itself and giving it the commands. So I know what needs to be done...but I just can't figure out why I can't telnet to the router itself. Being said, I opened port 23 through the firewall thinking maybe it was being blocked...still no luck. Then went threw services and the h-strings and changed it to Automatic...still nothing then changed it back. IP is also .254 not .1

Did you ever stop to think that if you cannot telnet into port 23 that it's already disabled.....or plain doesn't support it?????? And page 15 of the users manual shows you exactly how to connect to that non-existant web interface.

And did you ever stop to think that maybe the guy on Newegg simply misspoke and said telnet when he meant that he connected to the admin website???? Seriously, I do networking for a living and I might accidentally say telnet into the router (because I work with Cisco routers and do telnet into them)...but for a home soho router, I mean use the admin web page interface.

Here it the website to with a link to the users guide for your router
TRENDnet | Downloads | Routers | TW100-S4W1CA (Version G)

You can download the PDF, scan for the word telnet and find exactly 1 reference to it. And it's showing you how to do port forwarding to a telnet server that you might have on the network....not the router itself.

Yes, I checked...it does support telnet. And will the Version G manual work for a Version E router? Oh and if it was already disabled both Xbox's would receive open NAT types.

Edit: And the first sentence in that last post I meant the UPnP needs to be disabled. I didn't mean to say the router's telnet service. I miss-worded that wrong.

Well, good luck figuring out how to telnet into the device. It's extremely rare to find a SOHO router with telnet capabilities. I'm 99.5% sure that router doesn't have it...but oh well, it's your time...not mine.
