Do I need a Router or a Simple Hub?
Basically right now I have one computer hooked up to my modem which only has one ethernet hook-up. I am about to get xbox 360 Live and I want to basically have most of the bandwith for that and have some for the computer so my girlfriend can check her email or play simple iwon games. Would a simple hub do the trick or do I really need to get a router which has firewall and all that stuff that I really do not want. Thank you

a hub(or switch) will be fine. just so i have this right, you're going to have your computer wired and your xbox wired, right? if so, you're good to go with the hub. (and they're cheaper!)

well, unless you turn on internet connection sharing on your PC...you aren't going to be able to use the internet on 2 devices without a router.
I would strongly recommend the purchase of a router. You can get a TrendNet from NewEgg for $22. Newegg.com - TRENDnet TW100-S4W1CA 10/100Mbps DSL/Cable Broadband Router 1 x 10/100Mbps WAN Ports 4 x 10/100Mbps LAN Ports - Wired Routers
The router gives you basic NAT firewalling and easy port forwarding capabilities. Well worth the $22 just for the firewalling capabilities.
And you really don't want a HUB. These share bandwidth and experience collisions. They are nowhere near as efficient and as fast as a switch. If you do decide to NOT go with a router (which has a built-in switch), buy a switch rather than a Hub. With a switch you get full duplex transmissions...so no more collisions.

I would only get a switch if i had more than 1 ip from my isp, which i do but i would rather have a router for the hardware firewall.

I'd have to disagree with parks on this one, as I used to do this at home becuase I was too cheap to go get a proper 4 port ADSL modem/router!
You can connect the the current 1 port ethernet modem you have via CAT5 to a 4 port (or bigger) hub/switch and the modem still does actually have a router, a fully working DHCP server and all the other good stuff you need to make an network work with all the connected devices set to automatic!
So if you connect the modem to the hub via ethernet, and then connect the PC and the Xbox to the hub via ethernet, it will work like your actually connected to a router.
You DSL modem has a firewall the same as any router so you should be fine there too.
If you wanna post the model etc, I can check the specs to make sure.

lol wow thnx guys now im really confused, but to answer bennie i have a speedstream 4100 im using att dsl service. and yes both the pc and the 360 will be wired via cat5. the firewall i really could careless about i have it turned off on the modem anyways. and yes I only have 1 ip so the plan is hook wan to hub, hook pc to hub hook 360 to hub. will this mean that i will have to leave the pc on and have it serve as a server in order for the speedstream to work? My main concern is honestly speed, because i need all the speed i can get on the 360, and i do not want the pc to take half or all of the bandwith whenever my girl is on it. Thnx again guys

it might depend upon your ISP and the equipment Bennie. I have an Arris modem from my provider and I know that it will only make a connection and talk directly to 1 internal host. Plugged a hub/switch only provides access to the first device that it sees and additional machines simply don't connect.
So, that's my experience. Just pony up a few dollars for a router and you will be all set with a firewall to boot.

ISP supplied modems in the States must be alot different to those we get in Australia.
I haven't come across a single DSL modem yet that isn't capable of what I've described.
