All I know about it is that little tea cup icon it has. What exactly does it do?

its an object oriented programming language. The non microsoft equivalent of C++. You will have it installed so that you are able to run java programs written by other people, maybe mini games or some such

Java is a type of coffe grown on the island of Java.

(also its a program language like C++)
