Both of those sets would do the trick, I'd personally go with the Logitech's, as I've heard good things about that particular model, and you probably pay a premium for the Altec Lansing name.
I have the Creative I-Trigue 3200's, and as far as I'm concerned they're great for music, despite some negative reviews complaining of 'tinny' sounds. Not suggesting you should purchase these, but you could have a look at similarly priced Creative sets as well.

Thanks, I'll look into Creative speakers. I don't really like the design of some of their stuff though, mainly the three circle design speakers. I'm not sure which model they were though.

I recommend the X-540 Speaker System.
Amazon.com: Logitech X-540 5.1 Speaker System: Electronics
It is the one I have and it is awesome. I got it for 77 bucks brand new. I use it for my pc and when I game.

I would go 5.1, but I'm moving into a dorm in 3 months and I'd rather have something I can keep on my desk. Have you had any experience with good 2.1 systems?

Neither.
Unless they're just speakers to make noise, I'd buy a set of Grado headphones for under $100, or if you're not a very bassy person you cound try a set of IEMs for under $100.
When you say it's just being used for "music", I'm guessing the intent is active listening and not just background noise. If I'm wrong, go buy a set of cheap speakers from any brand, they're all pretty crap at the price range anyway~ (yes, even Logitechs will).

They would be for both active listening and background music. Also, I have Etymotic ER-6i earbuds, so I don't really want to spend more money on headphones. Do you have any suggestions as far as a 2.1 set goes?

No idea how much they are, think they are $110
I have heard a few good things about the Swan M10's
Newegg.com - HiVi Swans M10 2.1 Multimedia Speaker - Speakers
And put the sub on your desk, in front of you as if it was a centre channel, it play some directional sound.
Actually they might need an amp...
