Not everybody formulates their opinions based on what other people say.
I don't feel that vista is a worthwhile upgrade from XP. Certainly not worth spending the money on. For me, I would rather have performance over eye-candy and XP is simply faster. XP also takes less disk space.
Many of the eye-catching features of Vista (transparent windows, sidebar)...have a pretty significant impact to battery life in a laptop. So, for these reasons, I tend to shut all that stuff off. And like I said before, I value performance...so these things often do nothing more than reduce system performance.
Personally, I dislike the new Start menu. I don't like the collapsing menu for programs....and I don't like having to resort to the Windows 95 (classic) start menu. I've gotten quite used to the Start menu in XP and prefer that...however that isn't a choice anymore.
The UAC system (user access control)...is a great system in theory...but the actual implementation isn't that great. In fact, many users simply disable this new worthwhile feature because of it's annoying nature.
Even with SP1.....it seems that the time to copy/rename/delete files is far too long on Vista. I know tons of people have turned to 3rd party tools like Teracopy...but I don't feel that a 3rd party solution should be necessary for such a core system feature such as this. This is more of a principle thing for me.
All-in-All...Vista just doesn't offer me anything over XP that I value. XP is stable enough, has good enough support and just about everything that I need runs just fine here. Vista didn't solve enough problems to make me want to switch. So, I'll just stick to XP which I am already legally licensed to run on my computers.
