Internet Problem.... Plz help

My internet goes out about once daily sometimes more or less. But its really annoying. I know it takes about 3-5 min. to reset the router and modem but it just gets annoying and i called my internet provider and he tweaked a few things but he says it mainly has to do with my router he claims the router i have (linksys whatever) usually lags out with their internet and he says it wouldnt happen as often with a netgear router. But i dont really want to buy one. Anyone know any things/tips i can do to make it not lag out as much?

Step one: do not buy a netgear router. Seriously, they're horrible.

Linksys probably isn't your problem, but it's possible that the tech support at your ISP actually knows what he's talking about (not being sarcastic; they rarely do). I'm really not sure how to help since I have a similar problem that I can't fix (Your ISP wouldn't happen to be Knology, would it?), but if you're pretty tech smart and have the proper model of linksys router you can look into open source firmware to replace what the router if using now. It often helps, but if you don't know much about how you'd go about that I wouldn't risk messing up your router. You may end up needing to buy a new one, but save yourself the headaches of getting Netgear.

Like you said 'if your tech smart', then their is nothing wrong with netgear, i've got 1 netgear wireless router, 1 netgear wired router and 1 16 port managed netgear switch in this house, and another netgear wireless router in my flat, and i have not had a single error or problem with any of them.

Now back to the original poster, if you could name your broadband supplier, your package that you have with them, and also the model number of your router (as well as how you have set it up, e.g have you put a password on it), then i and other members (if they are willing and want to) can look up more information and see if any known issues arise.

in my opinion the guy you spoke to is chatting BS, your router is more than likely perfect, and it's something wrong at their end... but then if you have set your network up wrong, their could be a problem at your end.

bypass your router for a day or two. plug the modem straight to your computer, xbox, whaterver. if you're still having disconnects then obviously it's not a router issue. if the disconnects stop there's something going on with the router dropping communication with the modem.

I've had a look into it, and i've only found that the router has issues if there are several computers connected to it, and are transferring a lot of data, it clogs the log up. but that doesn't sound like it's the issue in your problem.

i was going to suggest that, if you plug a computer straight in the wall, and it still happens, then it's a fault with your ISP, if it stops happening, then you know it's an issue with your router.

well exactly...when the modem's plugged straight into the computer you won't be able to connect the xbox wirelessly. again this is just for testing purposes to determine where the issue comes from. so yes, you have to give up live for a day or two to fix the problem for good.
