We have a number of Mac's where I work and I'm always frustrated when I have to work on them. Coming from Windows, I don't find Mac's very user friendly. Therefore, I disagree that they are necessarily any easier to use.

Most of the apps come with the operating system...but there aren't really a ton of other apps to add on...other than the Adobe suite of products which is often not used by the average joe and not affordable either.

i know what you mean
final cut studio is very expensive
but that is why i think i windows desktop is vital
you get a little frustrated with the macs but i think they are the best for general computer usage

I think for general computer use, they are just too expensive for what you get. A budget computer for general computer use really doesn't need to cost anymore than about $700.

pparks, i agree with you completely about Linux. I use Linux on my computer as much as possible, unless something absolutely requires me to use Office 07 or CS3, then i have to boot up my windows partition. i can't wait until wine can handle that stuff...
yes, i've used OSX, but i've been a windows guy my whole life. its tough to make the change, but i think i can see why people like it. its just too expensive for me. i haven't checked the prices recently, but the last time i did, it was $1100 for the basic macbook. thats way too much for my wallet.

You hit it on the head there, they are to expensive for a general use PC. you can get a PC for less than £300 that will do all general things.
At the end of the day PC and Mac today are quite similar, anything one can do, the other can as well (maybe not as good, but it can be done in nearly all situations). Your point earlier about their not being so many products is only true for the big companies, but their are many top quality shareware applications out there that i couldn't live without.
I make websites for a living, and have been for a good five years now. You can use either a Macintosh or a PC, their is no difference. I personally choose the Macintosh because i've always liked them, never had issues with them, and the design aspect for a while was industry standard on a mac (not so much anymore). Luckily i could afford it.
I often hear people blabbing about how fixed the GUI is. but thats not the case, their are applications out their like windowsblinds, and their are communities out there who share there findings in how to mod the GUI. and there is level to how much you can change the GUI without using such applications. but the same applies to windows, you can only change so much until you have to take the next step to make any more changes.
I wouldn't say it's hard to change, i was a windows user all the way from 95 to just before vista's release. and i changed in under 2 days without any issues. my dad who has been using windows since it first came out, and he changed just last year in under a week with no issues. the interface is very user friendly, and things aren't that much different from windows. Various things are in different places, but you just have to learn where, and your on the way.... windows copy and paste = Ctrl + C Ctrl + V. Mac copy and paste Cmd + C Cmd + V. Not much difference.
I will admit if you go into the apple store and try and use one, it is hard, but you really have to put a good few hours in, but isn't it just the same for a non-windows user to use windows, it is hard at first, but you get it.

Like I said, I have some at work. Even brought one home for a few months to play around with. At the end of the day, far too expensive of a toy when I can do same things with Windows and Linux for far less. And what's up with them only having the desktops that are integrated into the monitors or the hideously overpriced for home use Mac Pro Workstations. I don't want an all in one computer/monitor, and the Mac Mini is just too small and unupgradeable to make the nerd in me happy. And the MacBook Pro's are very expensive too for the hardware. i can easily get a Dell or a Lenovo for $1,000 less with same specs.
Also, hate the Apple stores. Way too pretentious for me. I'm only uncomfortable in 3 places

If you regard it as a toy, then it is defiantly not the computer for you.
