Best Video Editing Program for Windows?

I'm looking at taking loads of football clips and putting them together into a big montage with effects and music, What would be the best editing program? I've heard stuff about sony Vegas but are there are other good ones to check out?

Thanks.

I use Adobe Premiere Pro

But for starting out why don't you give Windows Movie Maker a go - it should already be on your PC and can doo all that you specified
