They are just different distributions put out by different companies. Fedora is associated with RedHat Linux, while Ubuntu is run by Canonical and is based on Debian.

Getting a bit more nerdy, Fedora is very much bleeding edge. It's the absolute latest and greatest...and sometimes that can wreak havoc. There are tons of updates and while they sometimes fix problems, they can also cause problems. The point of Fedora is really to be a test bed to see what works well and those things eventually get moved into Red Hat Enterprise Linux.

Ubuntu on the other hand tends to be a bit more stable, fewer updates and just seems to work really well with lots of hardware. Of course, there are some who don't care for Ubuntu as some decisions have been made for you (not that you cannot change them).

Personally I used and supported Fedora for years...but just found for long term stability, ease of use and a great end-user community, Ubuntu fit the bill better.

From the GUI standpoint, most of your mainstream Linux distros use either Gnome (Fedora and Ubuntu) or KDE (SuSE and Kubuntu). These are just window manager applications and can be changed in most distros to the other if you prefer. In addition, there are many other alternatives also available like twm, fluxbox, etc. So, in many ways, most of your Linux distros "look the same", it's just what's under the hood that differs a bit from distro to distro.

Check out www.distrowatch.com for all of the various Linux distros that are out there. There are TONS of em.

They are, but the Intel's still rule the roost as far as performance goes and you can get into one for not much more than the Phenom II's.

Who here remembers when AMD broke the 1 Ghz barrier with the Athlon? I do! I remember getting that issue of Maximum PC and I wanted one so bad.

I remember that very well, in fact I have one of those Thunderbird Athlons in my basement. Funnier yet was when Intel got ahead of AMD in the clock cycle race and then all of a sudden AMD shifted gears and talked about the technology of the processor being far more important than the clock cycles...but then continued to sell CPU's with names like Athlon 5500+ to give the impression of faster clock cycles for uneducated consumers who bought just based on dumb marketing.

But they were correct in that clock speed wasn't everything. I remember the whole marketing of the first AMD64's. The battle was really great then. I think the purchase of ATI hurt AMD.

The AMD's are good processors, but the performance nod is still with Intel. You save a little with AMD, but not that much. I think the Phenom II is about $220 and the Core i7 is about $275...but the Core i7 outperforms it, hands-down.
