Don't sweat it. Reputation points don't mean anything whatsoever to me. I usually have to ask somebody where to go to even see them.

NOTE: Obviously, your Windows partition may be something other than /sda1..you will need to know where Windows is installed on your machine and substitute appropriately.
|
"sudo fdisk -l" Will list all partitions and /dev labels, if the disk is MSDOS labeled.
It doesn't work with GPT labelled disks (as fdisk can't partition them), but I doubt most home users would have this! (You'd only use GPT label on a single disk set larger than 2Tb. So, only for servers and big RAID sets)

Getting rid of the awful Ubuntu Orange look

I like the stock 9.04 look!
Will you cover a guide for upgrading? If your going from 8.10 you can upgrade without the install media, with the "sudo update-manager" command.

How to perform fast backups with rsync

Wouldn't "rsync -av ..." be a better option for data backup?
As usual, a great guide mate, It's just a shame that more people don't use Linux.

Upgrading to Ubuntu 9.04 | Ubuntu

No, I don't plan to cover an upgrade guide, as I'm not an OS upgrader kinda guy. I always start from scratch.

Yes it would. I suspected however that most people would have NTFS or FAT formatted external media...and thus thus "archive" portion would have thrown more errors trying to preserve file permissions, etc. So, it was a judgement call to go the way that I did. Obviously for my own backups, I go -av.

Yeah, I think so many just don't get a good start and struggle and go back to what they know. Games are also a huge issue as you know. But for me, I game on my console and use my computer for most everything else...so Linux suits me pretty darn well.

I'm currently running ubuntu from a live CD at the moment and it seems to be running fine. No crashes so far
I'm gonna run this for a bit longer and if it continues to run fine, I'm gonna install it
I'm gonna give ubuntu a good shot. I've always wanted to try it properly but haven't been able to because of incompatibilities. Thanks pparks for posting this guide

I'm updating that first page now. Thanks for the suggestion.

So, can I access my vista area in ubuntu? Like, all my music and stuff? or do I need to go into vista and copy everything to a public folder?

No, if you use the wubi installer, the system will automatically create a mount point called /host where you can access everything that is on your Vista machine. Super easy.

But can you still access your vista area even if it is password protected?

Is your Vista login password protected?
If so, your files are hidden by NTFS disk permissions that don't apply in Linux.
You can just mount the disk and browse the file system without an issue.
If your HDD or user account is encrypted, then that's a whole different story!
Niall, and easy way to check on the live disk is:
Open a Terminal:
(Type the following commands)
sudo mkdir /tmp/windows
sudo mount /dev/sda1 /tmp/windows --force
This will mount your Windows Partition in the /tmp/windows folder and you can browse to it with the File System browser.
