The OFFICIAL Google Android Thread

Alright, there's the iPhone thread and it's sticky and pretty and functional, just like the iPhone. But I thought Death, Bennie and a few others would have created an Android thread by now!

So here it is! I'm interested in it. There's a damn good chance it'll be on my next phone and I wanna know stuff about it!

I just saw Acer have announced the Liquid with a 1ghz Qualcomm processor
Acer's first Android phone impressively specced

I'm liking the high res screen. The Qualcomm processor is apparently going to be the next big thing in the HTC Windows Mobile lineup as well, so hopefully it delivers. I vaguely remember people having issues with older Qualcomm chips in the WM 2003/ WM5 days. I may be mistaken, though.

The only thing I don't like, the phone itself has no style at all. It looks boring and chunky! I'd probably go with the HTC variant based on looks, but I'll wait until reviews come out. I also like HTC's SenseUI, but I'm guessing that will probably be ported across by the community.

Android will give you the source code. It's that customisable.

The 1GHz Snapdragon is what the HTC HD2 has as well. It's awesome, it's exactly what Android needs...more power!

Though having an Acer laptop, I'm not a big fan of them. So who knows, Acer tends to be very hit or miss. If it's good, it should awesome.

I'm anxious for the Motorola Droid. Going to Verizon for sure and probably Sprint too.

But back to processors, the G1 and every other Android phone has an ARM11 based 528MHz CPU. It's cheap and it's okay.

The Pre and 3GS both have a faster and better Cortex A8 based 600MHz CPU. They're in nicer phones atm and the Droid will have this processor as well. The speed isn't what makes them better mainly, it's the how the processor works itself.

You don't really have customization in the way Android does. Android in its stock form is very customizable and rooted you can apply themes and more importantly custom roms.

Plus, Apple is trying pretty hard to stop jailbreaking. Android is Open Source...so no one really owns it even though Google created it and released it.

The HD2 looks awesome except for one thing. Windows Mobile 6.5, an even bigger waste of time than Windows ME! They've been touting WM7 for so long now that nobody wants to bother with 6.5. It's a waste of time. It's like someone going out and buying a Vista PC without the upgrade option. People are gonna be pissed if they haven't done their homework first!

Death, what are some good links to Android news and so on? I could Google search, but it's easier to get the info from someone who's gone through it all already!

I'm currently running MLIGN-HeroV2.5.5

There's a very high chance the HD2 will have Android ported to it.

The best way to describe Windows 6.5: "They took a pig and put lipstick on it"

Today we have a bunch of leaked info about Android 2.0 Eclair. Android 2.0 screenshot walkthrough : Boy Genius Report

I'm quite excited.

For news, I use twitter primarily...take a look at who I follow. I definitely get info through twitter faster than I do through RSS feeds or anything else.

My favorite sites however are:
AndroidCommunity - They have a good forum and news
Phandroid
AndroidCentral

I also use EngadgetMobile and Gizmodo, but that's more general.

Edit: Here's some more Acer Liquid info

  • Intuitive and easy to use
  • A true desktop
  • Widgets
  • Very customizable
  • Based on Linux, backed and developed by Google
  • Open Source - Better code, Running custom roms is not illegal, anyone can use Android for free, HUGE Developer Community
  • 10,000+ Apps that are written in Java which is very easy to code compared to the iPhone(uses its own version of C....why...)
  • Many different android phones on many networks meaning big worldwide install base(compared to the iPhone which is only very popular in the USA and limited to AT&T). Also big install base means more devs and bigger devs which gives us more and better apps!
  • Different Android phones give you options...like physical keyboard or no keyboard for example as well as general aesthetics and price

That's just some of it. Android is really fun to use and tailoring it to how you like is quite easy. The platform is still young not even a year old yet. However it has taken off quite well and the rate of its growth is only going up with the release of more powerful Android phones!
