I'm not going to get into a full explanation of surround sound, and I wouldn't be the best person to ask anyway. To break it down though, no it's not as easy as plugging in speakers. Nothing is that easy.

Your 2 sound choices for the 360, are the red and white stereo cables.. or you'll have to get an optical cable seperately, and plug it into a receiver with dolby 5.1 and an optical input. I'm guessing by the question you don't currently have a receiver, so unless you have 200-300 bucks to throw down on a budget HTIB I wouldn't worry about it right now. Of course, that's up to you.

I strongly recommend reading up on the official audio help thread. Before you start messing with surround sound, you really need a better understanding of what it is.

As Alan pointed out, you need an optical cable to plug in from the 360 into a receiver or other device which can actually DECODE the surround sound signal.

While you will find many computers speakers that are listed as 5.1, you have to have them connected to a device (like a soundcard) which has a surround sound decoder on it. And if you want to connect the 360 to a computer soundcard, you need to have a sound card which accepts an optical digital input.

Some computer speakers can accept the red/white audio cables, however you will NOT get true surround sound. You will hear sounds out of the back speakers, but they will be the same thing that you hear in the front.

So, getting a receiver and some speakers or a home theater in a box would be necessary to get surround sound from your 360.

The only thing which is "future proof" is DEATH. Did I mention, I absolutely hate the use of the term "future proof".
