Creative is a decent brand...for 40 GBP I doubt you're gonna get much better. They're 8W per channel with a 26W sub...so you're not really gonna be able to crank them without making the speakers distort. Yes you can make them work with a TV.
What I would probably do instead is try to get a higher quality stereo setup as you're not going to have surround sound at that price point.
Something like this perhaps: Amazon.co.uk: Logitech Z-4 Speaker System 80w Black (2.1): Electronics & Photo
The Creative Gigaworks look good too

Thanks for clearing that up. That Logitech system also looks good.
One question, you say I can make the Creative speakers work with my TV... do you know how exactly I will plug them in, will it involve buying an adaptor?

Yeah you'll need a simple Red/White RCA to Headphone Mini adapter. Shouldn't cost more than 10 GBP I imagine.
Also, try looking at stereos in your local electronic stores. I'm not sure how much they cost over there...but you may be able to find something better than computer speakers.

I know, Bose sucks balls.
I'm gonna get a new AV receiver soon, probably an Onkyo TX-SR705 or something similar.

Cool, I need a new receiver...but that's not happening within in the next two years. I just bought the Denon mic for $20 and hope it makes a significant difference after doing an auto calibration

Well the Z-4s have better sound quality...and the X-530s won't give you surround sound from a 360(but can from a PC with the right outputs)....
It's a bit of a trade off I suppose, I personally would prefer a higher quality stereo setup than having 5 speakers w/o Dolby Digital

Hey Death, thought I'd drop by and say I got a new Pre/Pro. I got a NAD T-163 for under $100!
It was on ebay for repair, grabbed it for $75 total. Opened it up, fixed the OSD transformer, reconnected the mains, now it runs like a beauty. Has a few war scares though:
Now I have to build a 5 x 30W discrete amp

How much $$ do you have to play with? Look to spend most of it on surround sound. How is the lighting in your room and what color are your walls?

Very nice, how did you learn to repair equipment like so?
What plans are you using for the amp? 30W isn't a lot of power...is that solid state or tube?
