Movies: If you plan to listen to movies on it, this is where I believe the headset or headphones really don't do justice. Even a fair priced set of Logitechs would probably be fair.
Games + Music: DAC/Amp combo if you seek audio fidelity. If just listening to it for the sake of listening to it (like the radio), then don't concern yourself too much.
How should I say it? Demands are filled easiest for games with a headset, movies basically scream for an actual 5.1 setup of decent quality, and for Hi-Fi music listening it will get rather expensive regardless.

Thanks, I appreciate you taking the time with all this.
I'll probably go for a 5.1 setup then, as I'll be getting a 22" Widescreen monitor it'll be (for me anyway) a decent movie/gaming setup.
I'm not too bothered about HiFi music, I'm happy with the quality I get from my Sound Blaster Live! and I-Trigue 3200's, I'm sure a XiFi will improve upon that.

OK, I have another question about surrounds. Would it matter if one is slightly higher than the other? Only 3-4 inches, so not a lot. I'm guessing it wouldn't make much of a difference, but just wanted to make sure.

not really. Your desk would be fine with the small speakers.

Well, I'm talking about the surrounds, the fronts will be fine. I can put one (of the surrounds) on the TV cabinet and another on a shelf which is about 3 inches higher then the cabinet. That shouldn't make much difference, should it?

your surrounds aren't going to get alot of traffic that will make the three inches noticable. 3 inches wouldn't even be noticable if they were your fronts.

Cheers dude. These are the speakers I'll probably go with, although I met get some cheaper ones if my budget is tight.

Okay, I wanted to build my own stuff, but it is still going to cost to much money, and take to much time. I looked through parts express, and found some cheap pioneers that look promising for a 7.0 .
center: http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/pshow...50-685&scqty=1
surrounds/rears: http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/pshow...50-670&scqty=2
fronts: http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/pshow...50-675&scqty=1
total is going to come to about $170 USD. Do these speakers look any good? Their SPL is pretty pathetic, but everything else seems fine for $170.

I come across a site ( http://www.smartratings.com/electronics/plasma_and_lcds) that compiles expert and user reviews for plasma and lcd televisions. I reckon they could be very useful when one is going to buy a new unit but doesn't know the product very well. Just my 2 cents.

Those are decent...but a bit pricey. I personally would rather get an Onkyo HT-S590 so I have a lot of room to upgrade in the future

Interesting site. However some reviews are ridiculous...like this Pioneer Elite getting a 73/100. Wired gave it a 70 because it doesn't come with speakers or an HDTV Tuner. Please tell me who has a $5000 plasma without a sound system and either Digital Cable or HD Satellite? Problem is there aren't enough reviews to outweigh the bad ones...like the number one rated TV being a Toshiba...it only has 2 reviews. It's good...but not better than a Panny or Pioneer
