thanks shike, I think I will probably just buy it to audition it, and see how it sounds, depending on their return policy.
My wallet is being pulled elsewhere, though; I'll keep ya updated.

DVDs are 480i, let's say your HDTV is 720p. So in order for the TV to display the 480i signal must be deinterlaced to 480p and then upscaled to 720p. A nice upconverting DVD player can usually do this better than your TV can and so it looks like you gained picture quality.
Also, how much was the Samsung? I generally only recommend OppoDigital DVD players as they are well priced and have some of the best picture qualitye

It was $99. I had a $100 gift card too so, it was technically free!! FTW!
What I was wondering is will it look better on non HDTV's?? I have SD right now... .

It won't make a difference on an SDTV. What's the model number of the Sammy you bought and where'd you get it from?

Sammy. I bought it at Best Buy. Yeah, didn't think it'd matter on a SDTV. The guy said it will look great on HD though. Upconverts to full 1080p. Good news is, we are close to getting one. The wife is tired of watching on a shitty TV!! WOOHOO!!

In other news, I'm trying to scratch up the funds to buy a bunch of parts and attempt to build my own DAC with no schematics besides what I get from the documentation I've seen from Texas Instruments. It looks like it'll be about $120 worth the parts . . . gah, I need to find another job soon.
The analog circuitry looks to be no harder than a basic headphone amp, the rest also looks rather straightforward. I guess the hardest part for me will be the power circuit when I get to it. Knowing my luck it won't happen till college, I could just see me at a desk with a soldering iron and the nerdy magnifying glasses. Sadly, I see that as a very calming thing and well within my character these days >_>'
Anyway, the parts I'm looking for not including capacitor/resistors or parts pertaining to that other than circuitry are:
Burr Brown PCM1704 "DAC" (x2)
Burr Brown DF1704 Digital Filter
NDK 80MHz Oscillator
Burr Brown OPA(mp)2134

What would the $120 dac be equivalent to?

Not a 100% sure. Most of the ones in the $500+ range tend to use the chip (although not sure if they use the digital filtering).
Then again, it all depends on when I get time and funds.

Alright, I've bought a Onkyo HT-S790 system and I can't figure out how to get the optical to work. I've talked to Onkyo, it was just some guy looking at a troubleshooting chart basically. No help.
So, My 360 has an aftermarket (not MS) VGA cable output thinger, I hook up an optical cable up to the back, put it in the optical inputs on the receiver, nothing. I fiddled with all the stuff to the best knowledge of the Onkyo guy. There is light coming out of the cable, does this mean for sure something is wrong on the receiver end? Thus not a shoddy cable as the Onkyo guy would have me believe? Everything works great with 2-channel RCA hookups or coaxial digital hookups. Just can't get the optical to work.
I know this doesn't really belong here, but I thought Deathwish could most likely help since he suggested Onkyo (how could I go for one of the ones you suggested when I got mine for $400?).

Did you set the optical input to the right component on the receiver?
