You may have had bad experiences, but there are plenty of people here who swear by Plasmas.

I'm with Lambo, go for a CRT; they offer the best image quality and can be had for a fraction of the price.

You can get rid of it...just turn on static and it'll get rid of the burn in. Burn in is generally caused by a highly uncalibrated display. Calibrate it w/ a calibration DVD and you're gonna have a much harder time burning it in.
