Well no...a 20 GBP surge protector will most likely do nothing. They'll stop small surges, but a lightning strike nearby will go right through it. And yes, they do happen...one happened to me in July and fried my network card.
You need to use either a power/line conditioner or an uninterruptible power supply(UPS) to have any chance vs lightning
