It'll work with XP, assuming you have a PCI-E slot on your motherboard. However, you won't get the benefits of DX10, so an 8 series card is rather pointless.
I'd recommend an Nvidia 7900 or an ATI x1950 over the 8500 series.

8500 is basically for shit all other than casual gaming, i wouldn't get anything under a 8800GTS 320mb if you want DX10 as its such a HUGE gap to the 8600 little faster than a 7900 or 7950, probably slower in some cases than a ATI x1950.
If you don't want DX10 just get a X1950 or 7950, DX10.1 is on its way (When i dont know) but it means a new card anyhoo.

Buy a DX10 card...and upgrade to Vista whenever Crysis comes out as you need Vista to run DX10 itself

I'ld get an 8500 series simply because you won't have to upgrade for DX10 in the coming year

By the time DX10 games actually arrive; I highly doubt whether the 8500 would run any of them at a playable frame rate.
