Vista Networking issue

Ok guys here is one I hope you can help me with,

I am trying to connect my windows vista pc with my xbox 360. Here is what I have done so far

Connected my pc with the xbox via a crossover cable, I also run a wireless internet through a router to the same pc. Why don't I plug the xbox into the router well because the router is at the other end of the house, I don't have the wireless adapter for the 360 nor a network cable long enough to reach the router.

My issue when I do the media test on the xbox it tells me that it is wired but fails when it gets to obtaining a IP. I have tried to manually config the pc and the xbox and still does the same thing. Which means I can not connect my media center up properly

My vista machine tells me that the network is there but says it is unidentifed then it tells me that DCHP is enabled which in my mind says that I should be able to get a IP on the 360

Also can I share my wireless internet connection to my 360 via Vistas ICS using my pc's network port as a gateway like thing

any help please

Our guide on connecting. Luckily, Jimmy's on. He's the resident expert. If you're questions not answered by that thread, he should be able to help.

Half on, half off topic. But I wish I never installed vista on my computers. It is an absolute mess to work with. It has made me want to sell this computer and go buy myself an imac.

Ok, your issue is a little different since you are connecting the PC and the 360 directly instead of using a modem/ router with DHCP (automatic IP address configuration). You have DHCP on your router to the PC, but not from the PC to the 360. If you were to connect directly to the router either with a cable or with wireless, then you'd be sorted.

What you'll need to do is enable Internet Connection Sharing, to share the wireless internet on your PC with the network cable to your 360.
Unfortunately, I haven't done it in Vista, but I can get you a good start.

This thread is here to help with XP, for now. Have a look at the post explaining ICS connections, and it will explain the concept. The only issue is finding those same options in Vista.

We also have a member here, ShadowmanUK, who runs a site called http://www.xboxlivetheguide.co.uk. I haven't looked, but he may well have updated his site with where things are located in Vista.

Doing a search in Google for Vista ICS might bring up some results for you as well.

Just to give you a update, I managed to get media center set up on the 360 however I can not share files even though my pc can see the xbox 360. I can see windows vistas default shared files but nothing else that is shared even after I add the files I want I still can not access them on the 360.

And for some reason ICS does not work with Vista, I believe that I have it set up properly but can not get the xbox to see the connection
