This looks like a promising option. I might get one when they come out. Like Rossdude said, the upscaling of regular dvds is a good reason to get one.
Nice to have more options I guess.

Having your dvds at 720/1080p is amazing. Then they'll be no point to upgrade to blu ray and hd dvd for a while. I hate how they morons think people can just drop their collection and move on. DVDs didn't get popular/affordable until 3-5 years ago. They're still new to people in their homes, the players are finally affordable now.
I only support hd gaming and hd football(tv). if my movies can upscale, no need to upgrade.
I only upgraded from vhs to dvd because the picture was noticeable and the sound was noticeable(better).
PLus, I didn't have to rewind or fast forward.

Upconverted DVDs look decent don't get me wrong...but it's nothing compared to HDTV or HD Movies. Upconverted DVDs are still SD at the source so they'll never have the detail that HDTV and HD Movies have

I wouldn't say this is the Betamax of HD format disks, that title belongs to Blu ray, this is more like the little known Video 2000 from Philips which was competing against VHS and Betamax. Will this make more of a dent than Video 2000 though? I guess we will just have to wait and see.
I can connect a PC to my TV, so as soon as HD downloads take off, i will probably be collecting my films on hard-drive instead, without having to worry about this bloody format war.

a very great disc format like hd-dvd should be made for some fucking simplicity here. idiotic people making 8 thousand different formats keeping me waiting to see which one wins. so for all the people who say ill wait to see who wins and then buy it are basically saying lets put the damn disc owners out of buisness. so lets all buy hd-dvd's and not anything else so they will all go out of buisness. lol

bah, BluRay is a superior technology that simply costs a little more. They hold more per disk...the end
