Back to the topic, i've seen both tvs. 1080p .. and most tvs with 720p can go up to 1080i always. Personally,720p looks amazing. I saw the SC vs GA game, I thought it was so cool how you cool see the water glare off of the helmets from the rain. It look like real paint.
I went to bestbuy, I saw the difference from 1080p and 720p. If you actually look at them together, 1080p feels like you can reach out and touch it. My parents are in the film, supposedly the world should be in HD in 2010, this is gonna rock!

Yeah Mitsubishi is making a laser variation of DLP.
You compared TVs in Best Buy...meaning they're not close to calibrated. 1080p is supposed to give you more detail in an image. What you probably saw was a difference in settings and you simply liking one more than the other

No, actually it's not that everything will be HD...everything will simply be digital. Very big difference.

Well they seem to be almost the exact same except for in resolution. So if you really have an extra $1k to spend...then the 1080p isn't a bad choice. But if you'ld rather spend that $1k elsewhere...the 720p version will give you almost the same picture quality. If you were to get the 720p and then get it ISF calibrated...it'ld undoubtedly have a better picture
How far back do you sit? If you plan to sit 7' back or so...the 1080p shouldn't even really be considered

Here's my theory, deathwish give me your input. I don't watch tv that much and just started console gaming again. I'm almost done with dead rising, atm i'm just leveling up so when I get my hd tv I can beat the game right. I can't read shit on sdtv, the text is all small and blurry.
This is what I would do. I would get a nice 40-50 incher, you can get a nice 720/1080i for 700-1000 bucks now. They don't cost that much as they use to. No media really supports up to 1080p yet, so just get a tv that can scale to 720p/1080i. All of the games on the 360/ps3 are just basically using the 720p resolution and so are the movies.
I'm still researching, but in 2009 or 2010 these tvs will be like 300-500 with 1080p. It's just like standard tvs, they use to cost a butt load. Now, you can get a 32 inch for a 100 bucks, dead technology. At first, I thought to myself come on is hd that worth it? When I saw the jags vs indy game last year. That's when I knew I wanted to go HD. I can tell hd for tv, you can see the audience so much better, instead of being fuzzy and shady. They're more detailed and crisp.
If the laser tv is true, I say get a 720, then upgrade in a few years!

What I would do is get the largest quality 720p display your money could afford(assuming you can sit far back enough). Or better yet get a pj. Also, almost every HDTV is 720p or 1080p, not 1080i.
I don't see 1080p 50" HDTVs being $500 in 2 years. That's too optimistic. Time will tell I suppose.
How much you looking to spend and how far back do you sit?
Oh also all BR/HD-DVD movies are 1080p
