Alright pparks, Deathwish, you guys are so smart, should I buy a 65" DLP? What are your thoughts on them? Or would I just be better off getting a 50 plasma? It is mainly for movie/tv watching, all gaming is done on my 40 sammy.

Well, I don't have a problem with DLP's....but they are projection based....which means that unless you get the newer LED models, you have a bulb to replace. Also, it will darken down a bit from the sides.
DLP's typically do a good job with SDTV signals and have better black levels than LCD. However, the black levels are not as good as they are on a plasma.
How far away are you going to be from the tv? Unless you have a lot of room, you may find the 65" to be too big. Friends of mine have a 65" Toshiba DLP 1080p, and they sit about 7 feet away....and it's far too big for the room. You always see too many pixels on everything but an HDTV signal.

i have to disagree about discernable differences i wnet from a 42 inch lcd RCA 720P television to a 42 inch 1080p set due to black fridday having an awesome deal on it i just had to get my ass out of bed at 3AM in HDDVD the differences sre very tiny but when playing games the resoultion change is significant of course i sit ridiculosley close to the set. both tvs are from the same manufacturer and both are set with the same settings i kept the 720P upstairs for my fiances PS3. if the comparison is based on film and television the difference is not very big but whne i fire up COD4 i can see people from a distance better and due to the fact i sit close to the screen i like not being able to see the pixels are clearly on the new set of couse my vision is around 20/15, so that might be soe of the difference also.

How far back do you sit? You should pick a size based on viewing distance. A plasma will generally give you a better picture while a DLP is obviously a better bang for your buck. Also a DLP will need a new bulb every 5 years of so(unless it's LED)

Unless you clarify I'm going to assume you're running the RCA @ 720p and the new display at 1080p. That's not what this comparison is about. It's about running two HDTVs w/ a 1080p signal when one has a 720p resolution and the other has a 1080p resolution.
If someone tells you a 1080p signal and 720p signal look the same, they're quite mistaken

Its all about the ratio's, 1080 will be noticeably different but only on a MUCH larger screen. But of course then you have the problem that you have to sit farther away from the screen to fully appreciate it. However, sitting further away makes higher resolutions somewhat irrelevant- a vicious circle. In my opinion, alot of this HD mumbo-jumbo is purely physiological; it just looks better in your mind, and i suppose there's nothing wrong with that if thats what makes you happy. Just my 2 cents on what i've experienced.

as I was at walmart last week looking at HDTVs to buy (I went ahead and bought the 26" 720p VIZIO), I was looking between the 1080p plasmas and 720p plasmas and really saw no difference. except that the 720p plasmas for the same price had better contrast ratios, more ports, etc.

If you read the comparison more thoroughly you'll notice they're comparing 130" @ 8' away. If you don't see the difference then I doubt you ever will

It just baffles me how many people simply refuse to believe it. Even on large screens, the difference is negligible. And as Death says, we are talking 130" screens from 8 feet away. Unless you are sitting 2.1 feet from your 50" TV...the difference is irrelevant to human vision.

WRONG
Why wont you just admit it, that you cannot see the difference. No matter how big or small the difference may be.
There is a difference. Some people can see it, some people can not. It is a simple concept to understand.
And simply because you cannot see it, doesn't mean that nobody can see it.
I can see the difference. And trust me I like 1080p over 720p.
Just get over it.
