Ok, fine. I cannot see any difference. On properly calibrated sets, running from a 1080p source, I am unable to see any difference whatsoever between 1080p and 720p with screen sizes between 27"-70".

However, those who claim to "really see the difference", often have not been put in a situation where they are watching the EXACT same source material on PROPERLY CALIBRATED displays with one at 720p and one at 1080p. As the original post here shows, in this situation people don't see a difference even on very large screens from a relatively close difference.
All too often, people walk into a store, look at a 720p sitting right next to a 1080p showing the same tv show. They say, well, I can see a difference between the 2. Well, that's irrelevant because usually the tv size differs, the brands differ, the calibrations are off and who knows what the actual input source material is. That doesn't prove anything at all.
The other people who claim big differences are those thinking in terms of computer resolutions. Yes, the difference there between 1386x768 and 1920x1080 is a huge difference. Anybody can see that. I'm not talking about computer resolutions...but rather output from a 360 playing a video game or movies/hdtv content.

For curiosity sake, can you please explain the methods you used to compare 720p versus 1080p output to make this claim? I just want to make sure that you didn't do the In-store "side by side" test or the "my new tv looks better than my friends tv" test.

1. In store I know you can't get a good feel. They don't have the TV's calibrated at all. So you cannot tell from an in store comparison.
2. When your looking at something as big as what those people were it would be harder to tell the difference. Point being is that as you get bigger the image quality decreases. There is a limit as to what looks good and what doesn't.
3. I am not comparing computer resolutions.
4. There are little fine details that stand out in 1080p and are not as obvious when viewing at 720p. I never said it was a big difference. Nowhere did I say that. All I have been saying is that there is a difference.

Again, technically there is certainly a difference. But I maintain not enough to really take notice of.
In your 4th point, you mention, "little fine details", which are "not as obvious" at 720p. I honestly feel that people feel a sense of talking themselves into a difference because they know that mathematically speaking it must be better.
Some people say small TV's don't show the improvement and it requires a huge screen, others like yourself maintain that large screens don't show the improvement, but rather you need smaller screens. Overall, seems like a lot of confusion and dissention among the ranks over something that should be pretty clear. I mean, how can 1080p not look better than 720p??? It's a higher number, it costs more and the industry is trying to lure me in with terms like "full hd", or "real hd". It's like a telemarketer....people are being sold on something they don't really need.
In the end, if you want to buy a 1080p display, I say go for it. The ones I feel sorry for are the people who turn their backs on a better quality plasma at 720p for a lesser quality LCD or DLP simply because it has 1080p and that is "true HD"

No no no...
There is a limit as to what it will still look the best on.
People can think what they want. If they are roped into it fine. That is there fault.
1. I work in TV
2. I see a lot of thing most people do not. Because of working in TV. I notice little things every time I watch TV. Every time I watch a movie. I see things differently then most do.
3. I can see a difference between 720p and 1080p. I wasn't roped into it. I felt I would get a better picture from a 1080p unit and guess what I am. For me 1080p is better. 720p might be great for you and that is fine and dandy. But to tell me that there isn't a difference is bullshit. I don't care how small the difference is. I can see the difference. Plain and simple.

Ok, well I can agree to disagree.
It sounds like you are saying that 1) if you work in TV 2) and you have extremely sensitive eyes that pick up on details that MOST people cannot see than you stand a chance to see a very minute difference. For everybody else, it's likely not different. Got it.

1080p is better than 720p but there is a lot of other stuff that goes into it plus for the average folk most everything tops out at 720p anyway

Sure 1080p is better than 720p, but you can't see the difference. I'm not quite sure you say things to out at 720p, leads me to believe you're talking about a 720p signal when we're talking a 720p resolution display.

i am talking about the signal, for the average person they can only get 720p signal so 1080p wont look any better no matter how close they look on teh 1080p signal

You can see the difference if your TV is larger than 42". I can tell a slight difference with my new 47" 1080p LCD over my 42" LCD running 720p
