Are they calibrated? Are they running the same signal? Are they from the same line of HDTVs?

We're not talking about the signal. Anyone can see a difference between 1080p and 720p signals. We are talking about the resolution of the HDTV itself. For example my Panasonic plasma can accept 1080p via HDMI, but it has a 720p resolution. Does that mean a Panasonic plasma w/ a 1080p resolution will look better with the same 1080p signal? No!
720p and 1080p resolution displays look the same assuming the other aspects are constant

I spent less on my TV (Pioneer 5080) and used the extra money to get it ISF calibrated. I would be willing to put it up against ANY non-calibrated 1080p set. 1080P is a lot of hype, I can't tell the difference at my viewing distance (8'-10').

Do you get it calibrated at the store when you buy it or is that something extra. I think I remember deathwish saying the pioneer elite comes with a 400 dollar calibration.
One more question. This might have been covered. Can you run your xbox360 in 1080p mode on a 720p TV to get the better input source?
It looks like I going either the kuro or the panny 50'. I told my wife how much an elite was and I thought she was gonna kill me.

I got my calibration done by someone who came highly recommended on the AVS Forums. Unfortunately, he only takes trips if he gets a group of TVs to do so I don't know if you would be able to get him. Here is his site:
HDTV by Chad B
It ran me $375 minus $50 for referring a few friends. I also had him calibrate my HT gear for $85.
You can definitely run your Xbox in 1080p on the TV, it just won't show up as that. I am not positive on the technical aspects why, but it does work. (I have a PS3 hooked up through HDMI 1.3a)

Getting the actual calibration done is even better than the precalibrated settings. They're both to ISF standards

So you take it somewhere to have it done? Sorry if I didn't get your last post.

Not usually. Here is a website where you can find ISF calibrators in your area:
Imaging Science
The good ones will all come to your house because it is nearly impossible to accurately calibrate the unit outside of the situation it will be viewed in.

An ISF certified calibrator will come out to your house and calibrate your HDTV using over $10,000 worth of equipment. If you ever want a professional calibration done, it should be be done by someone that is ISF certified.

Or save what it will cost you and buy a calibration disc that you can do yourself and get a damn good calibration.
Might not be professional, but guess what a lot of people have used these discs with great results. Myself included.
DVE, AVIA, Monster
Check AMAZON and search for calibration disc. Should come up.
