1080p vs 720p Shootout - They look the same!
I stumbled upon this awesome thread. About 40 people in Athens took two Marantz(a very nice high end brand) projectors. One was 720p and the other was 1080p. They set them both up to play on the same screen with a 1080p signal coming from identical PCs going to both projectors.
130" screen at 12-13' away and people were mistaking the 720p projector to be the 1080p one. In essence, the difference was negligible.
The conclusion is that it's better to buy a top of the line 720p display than a 1080p display that's not top of the line. The 720p display will have better processors and internals and is thus a better buy as the difference in resolution is nonexistent.

Mods, I'ld love a sticky...
Also, the difference you may see between the screenshots has to do with the gamma being slightly off. Also the pictures were taken of the movie going on so you'll notice a slight difference in the screen shots as they are not still. However I for one could not see any difference in detail(the entire point of 1080p). I see a difference in colors and black detail...but that has nothing to do with 1080p or 720p..that's a calibration issue. The projectors were calibrated but they didn't have enough time to calibrate the gamma curve.
Most were surprised to find out which pj was 1080p and which was 720p...I sure was!

first off taking a picture of a projector is not going to give you a reliable real comparison because the light that reflects on to the camera sensor is going to give a slight blur effect since the shutter has to be open for a long period of time meaning that still blue pixel will start to overflow
Second it's not that 1080p doesn't have better quality it's just that u won't notice it if ur size/how far u sit back ratio is big and ur money is better spent on a good video processor rather than a higher resolution and if ur going to use the tv has a monitor 1080p will give so much more space
and i hope no one will judge by this comparison because the picture itself of the screens is not 1080p or even 720p meaning there bother scaled down and were not taken in a lossless format(the picture as been compressed meaning it lost some quality and/or color)

Has anyone ever heard of laser tv? supposedly coming out this jan? 3x sharper then plasma and uber cheap?! And the smallest will be 50inches and 3 beams of light?! Some companies already confirmed it's in the works, it'll have a 2560x1600 resolutions. 1080p is 1900x1200.
Back to the topic, i've seen both tvs. 1080p .. and most tvs with 720p can go up to 1080i always. Personally,720p looks amazing. I saw the SC vs GA game, I thought it was so cool how you cool see the water glare off of the helmets from the rain. It look like real paint.
I went to bestbuy, I saw the difference from 1080p and 720p. If you actually look at them together, 1080p feels like you can reach out and touch it. My parents are in the film, supposedly the world should be in HD in 2010, this is gonna rock!

ya the FCC is requiring that everything broadcasting must be in HD by 2009 so by 2010 HD will be here completely

Not quite:
The law mandates the shutting off of analog NTSC broadcasts in the US on Feb 17, 2009
With regards to the topic at hand: 1080p is a marketing gimmick, more or less.

I don't know if it was rain, but the helmets look so smooth in the light. It looked like real paint. I want a tv so badly, but with these new tvs coming out I can wait another 4-5 months I suppose

Sure but reading about the 40 people that were there for the 1080p vs 720p comparison does say a lot. The pictures are really just to show that the comparison was quite good and fair. They even went as far as to make the two pjs look the same so one couldn't be biased at all
Also, it's 130" image at about 12' away. That's closer than almost anyone watches a TV from(less than the 1.5x away recommendation). At that distance any extra detail should show up.
