Widescreen only not??
Why is it sometimes when you have a widescreen movie and a widescreen movie it doesn't always use the whole screen??? Even tv sometimes doesn't fill the who screen so If you have a 60 in. tv you only see 50 in. of picture???? Can anybody explain this???

Do you mean when you are watching a 2.35:1 ratio movie? That the original ratio used when it was filmed. Movies displayed in 16:9 or 4:3 are removing parts of the movie from the left and right of the image. Widescreen TVs generally have a ratio of 16:9 so when watching a movie in 2.35:1 the tv will have black bars across the top and bottom of the screen.
For example a 16:9 image
same image but cropped in at sides

Sort of I'm talking about the top and bottom being cropped off though.

It's because of the aspect ratios. Widescreen HDTV's are defined as 16:9. Which means it's longer than it is tall. If you do the math, the ratio is 1.77 to 1. Which means that the length is 1.77 times as long as the height.
Now, movies are shot in a variety of resolutions. 1.85 to 1 is common, 2.35 to 1 is common, and 1.7x to 1 is pretty common.
So, if a movie is 2.35 to 1, that means it's 2.35 times as long as it is tall. Therefore, on your TV, it has to put black bars at the top and bottom to preserve the aspect ratio that the original was shot in.
Have you ever noticed the curtains moving around at the movie theater?? They do the same thing and change the rough size of the screen to fix the movie being displayed
hope that helps clear up the confusion.
If not, here is a wikipedia page;

Ahh how I wish I had a 2.35:1 to setup. One day perhaps mainstream HDTVs will use the uber widescreen format

Good info on aspect ratios, guys.
I dig it. I wouldn't worry too much about those little black bars. What's most important is having the PROPER aspect ratio for a given video.
At the size that HDTVs are these days, who cares if there's little black bars? lol I can't STAND when i go to someone's place and they are running the improper aspect ratio and they say "what are you talking about, it looks great" when you mention it... lol

i hate that most tv's are 16:9 and very few movies are shot in it. 60" for a screen and dont even get to use most of it. luckily the 360 is the proper aspect ratio!

pparks thanks. Probably the best response to a question in a long time on this forum. Since most responses have something to do with penises.
